Larry Dossey
Larry Dossey, M.D., is an American physician and bestselling author widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in the movement to integrate spirituality and consciousness into modern medicine. Born in 1940 in Groesbeck, Texas, he earned his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and later served as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam, receiving military decorations for valor. He went on to become Chief of Staff of Medical City Dallas Hospital in 1982 before devoting himself fully to research and writing on the healing potential of the human mind and spirit.
Dossey is best known for his pioneering framework dividing the history of medicine into three eras: Era I, the conventional mechanical model; Era II, mind-body medicine, which recognizes how thoughts and emotions affect physical health; and Era III, a consciousness-based model in which healing intention and prayer can transcend the boundaries of the individual body. His landmark 1993 book Healing Words brought the scientific case for prayer's role in health to a mainstream audience, reviewing over 130 studies on the effects of prayer and intention on biological systems. That work, along with Prayer Is Good Medicine (1997) and Reinventing Medicine (1999), established him as the foremost popularizer of research-backed spiritual healing practices in the English-speaking world.
For listeners exploring the Nightingale-Conant catalog, Larry Dossey's programs offer a compelling blend of clinical credibility and open-minded inquiry into the deeper dimensions of healing. Drawing on decades of study and thousands of patient interactions, he challenges the assumption that medicine must remain strictly materialist — arguing instead that consciousness, compassion, and prayer are not soft supplements to medical care but measurable forces with the power to transform health outcomes. His work continues to inspire physicians, patients, and seekers who believe that true wellness encompasses body, mind, and spirit.
