David Allen

David Allen is an American author, productivity consultant, and creator of the Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology — one of the most widely adopted personal productivity systems in the world. Born on December 28, 1945, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Allen studied at New College of Florida before completing graduate work in American history at the University of California, Berkeley. Before finding his calling as a productivity expert, he explored dozens of different vocations, a journey that ultimately shaped his deep understanding of how people manage work and attention.

Allen's path to GTD began in the 1980s when he entered management consulting and started refining a systematic approach to stress-free productivity. His methodology, formally introduced in the landmark 2001 book Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, is built on a deceptively simple principle: the human mind is made for having ideas, not holding them. By capturing every commitment, project, and next action into a trusted external system, GTD frees the mind from the cognitive burden of remembering and allows individuals to focus fully on the task at hand. The approach has been embraced by executives, entrepreneurs, students, and creatives across virtually every industry.

Among the most influential business and self-help writers of the 21st century, Allen has authored several follow-up works including Ready for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work and Life (2003), Making It All Work: Winning at the Game of Work and Business of Life (2008), and a major revised edition of his flagship book in 2015. His programs through Nightingale-Conant bring GTD's transformative principles directly to listeners seeking to master their workflow, reduce overwhelm, and achieve greater clarity and control in both their professional and personal lives.
