Seth Godin
Seth Godin is one of the most influential marketing thinkers and bestselling authors of his generation. Born in 1960, he studied computer science and philosophy at Tufts University before earning his MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He launched his career as a book packager in the 1980s before co-founding Yoyodyne in 1995, a pioneering internet direct-marketing company that introduced the concept of "permission marketing" — the idea that marketers should earn the attention of prospects rather than interrupting them. Yahoo! acquired Yoyodyne for $29.6 million in 1998, and Godin went on to serve as Yahoo's Vice President of Direct Marketing.
Godin's true impact came through his prolific writing career, which has produced more than twenty bestselling books that have reshaped how businesses and leaders think about marketing, change, and meaning. Purple Cow (2003) challenged companies to create truly remarkable products rather than relying on advertising to sell mediocre ones. Tribes (2008) argued that the internet had revived humanity's primal need for leadership and belonging, inviting readers to step up and lead movements. Linchpin (2010) made the case that in the modern economy, indispensable people — those who do creative, generous, human work — are the ones who thrive. His 2018 manifesto This Is Marketing distilled decades of thinking into a framework that treats marketing as service, not manipulation. In 2018, the American Marketing Association inducted him into its Marketing Hall of Fame.
Beyond books, Godin founded Squidoo in 2006, a user-generated content platform that grew into one of the most-visited websites on the internet before being sold to HubPages in 2014. He later launched the altMBA, an intensive online leadership workshop, and the Akimbo podcast, through which he continues to challenge thousands of listeners to make change, lead generously, and do work that matters. For Nightingale-Conant audiences, Godin's programs offer practical, permission-based frameworks for building remarkable brands, leading through uncertainty, and becoming indispensable in any field.
