Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., trained as a psychologist and medical anthropologist and has investigated the traditions of the Andes and the Amazon for more than 25 years. He has developed a body of healing knowledge that is readily accessible to the West, and he provides us with a scientific framework through which we can learn the ancient healing practices. His newest book, Shaman, Healer, Sage, was selected as book of the month by the One Spirit Book Club.

Dr. Villoldo began his research in the Amazon, working with medicine people who had mastered "the journey beyond death." His investigations led him to the high mountains of the Andes and the Inca medicine people.

In 1984, Dr. Villoldo founded The Four Winds Society. Previously, while on the faculty of San Francisco State University, Dr. Villoldo founded and directed the Bio-Self Regulation Laboratory, where he investigated the effects of energy healing on blood and brain chemistry. Dr. Villoldo also founded the Mountain Medicine and the Clothe the Children projects. These projects deploy physicians, nurses, and veterinarians to high mountain villages in the Andes, whose inhabitants have little or no recourse to medical assistance. They have provided medical assistance to 600 villagers in five communities, and veterinary care to over 5,000 alpacas and llamas. They have also collected and transported, on horseback, clothing for hundreds of children living in villages in the Andes at 16,000 feet above sea level.

Dr. Villoldo's books include: Shaman, Healer, Sage (2000); The First Story Ever Told (with E. Jendresen, 1996); Island of the Sun (with E. Jendresen, 1994); Dance of the Four Winds, Secrets of the Inca Medicine Wheel (with E. Jendresen, 1994); Healing States (with Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., 1985); Millennium, Glimpses into the 21st Century (1980); The Multi-Cultural Developmental Inventory and Guide to Early Education (1978); and The Realms of Healing (with Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., 1976).
